Paint Branch Trail detour close-upTrail Detour

PLEASE NOTE: A portion of the Paint Branch Trail is closed while the State Highway Administration (SHA) conducts a stream restoration project in the Hollywood Branch stream tributary adjacent to Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Park as part of the Environmental Stewardship Compensatory Mitigation package for the Intercounty Connector (ICC) - more about ICC projects in parks .

The work is expected to be completed in late 2015. Please refer to the detour map (PDF, 500KB) and signs posted in the park to guide you through the detour. - Posted 3-31-15


This 95-acre park was acquired by M-NCPPC in 1976. Many visitors enjoy the picnic area and the small lake.

Martin Luther King Jr. Heart Smart Trail. HeartSmart Trail
Follow this level 0.8 mile hard surface path around the park. Bronze medallions are embedded in the path every 1/10 of a mile so walkers may track the distance they travel. This HeartSmart trail is 0.8 miles in length and starts at the kiosk by the path next to the parking lot just past the Swim Center. Unless noted otherwise on the map, trails marked “Natural Surface” and “Hard Surface” are "Shared by All" trails which includes hikers, bikers and equestrians. Additional information about permitted uses of Park trails is available on our Trail User Information page.

There are 2.8 miles of hard surface trails in the Park that also connect to the Paint Branch Stream Valley Park Trail.

Trail characteristics

Easy to follow, gentle grades. The trails wind in and around the whole park and its sport facilities.

Access and parking


Ample parking is available throughout the Park. The hard surface trails in this park are fully accessible, especially the Heart Smart Trail loop.
